Lindy Long’s Log, Round 3, Week 1

Hello there, blog!

It’s our first week in the new round! We’ve moved to Wilmington, Delaware to work with New Castle County  Habitat for Humanity. We’re only going to be with New Castle Habitat for two weeks, but we’re looking forward to leaving our mark here in Wilmington.

Since it’s so nearby and so active, New Castle Habitat has had a lot of AmeriCorps NCCC teams working with them. I think we’re the third this year. Last round, we were the first team to ever work with Hamden YMCA, and now we’re partnered with a long-time friend of the program. On one hand, it’s exciting to work with a first-time sponsor, because we get to make a good impression and kind of work things out as we go. Not many people expect us to get as much done as we do, so it’s fun to surprise them. On the other hand, a repeat sponsor is really familiar with how AmeriCorps works and sometimes that can make the day-to-day go smoother.

This is a short week for us. On Thursday, we moved here and got settled in. Friday, we had an orientation with Chris, the volunteer coordinator for New Castle Habitat. We also got a refresher course in some of the power tools we’re going to be using. In addition, we practiced our hammering and measuring skills. That’s basic stuff, but easy to mess up. I’m pretty bad at hammering.

Our only full workday was Saturday, where we got to work on some finishing touches at a housing project–replacing dead sod with new seed, spray painting a chain link fence, planting and mulching and more painting. It feels like it’s been forever since we really worked.

We have some great things planned, including some awesome Individual Service Projects that Lina is lining up for us, and a trip to D.C. to do a presentation. Wish us luck!
