Labor Day Week-Lindy’s Log, week 3

Hey blog!

Sorry I’ve been lagging behind, we’ve been keeping busy.

Week before last, we had a very interesting labor day week. It started with a normal work day on Tuesday when we cleared brush and worked on trails.

On Wednesday, we had an invitation to an “AmeriCorps Appreciation Day,” where Connecticut invited AmeriCorps members out to a theme park, Lake Compound, for workshops, speeches, lunch and a free day at the theme park. Since we happened to be in the state at the time, they invited us to be part of the fun.

It was amazing to not only get a day of travel and fun, but also meet AmeriCorps members from all different programs across the state. I slid down a log slide with a lady in her second year of AmeriCorps, rode a coaster with a guy who had worked with NCCC friends of mine from another team, and had lunch with some awesome SeniorCorps members. It’s always wonderful to know that we’re part of something bigger than ourselves–not only a vague service community, but a concrete collection of people all in AmeriCorps at the same time.

On Thursday and Friday, we had yet another awesome new opportunity–working with Kaboom to build  a playground in Bridgeport, CT. I’m not gonna lie, it was awesome. We got to unearth a surprise whole car, part by part, from the ground. We got our hands on power tools we haven’t seen since training, as well as our old favorites, the shovel and pickaxe. We loved the Kaboom team, and we had a great two days prepping the site for the playground build to happen that weekend.

It was refreshing to have a week with a different structure, and doing so many different things!
